“Trenchless” means fixing a failed sewer lateral without excavating its full length — usually through one or two small access pits instead of a trench through your yard, driveway, or that oak tree’s roots. Cured-in-place pipe: a resin-saturated liner is inverted or pulled into your existing pipe, inflated, and cured into a new, jointless pipe inside the old one. Wins: minimal digging, no joints for roots to attack, handles cracked clay and moderately deteriorated lines well. Limits: the host pipe must hold its shape — a collapsed section can’t be lined; severe bellies remain bellies (the liner follows the sag); and the liner slightly reduces diameter. Deformed Orangeburg is a judgment call the camera footage should settle — too far gone and lining is off the table.
A bursting head is pulled through the old pipe, fracturing it outward while dragging new HDPE pipe into the space behind it. Wins: replaces the pipe entirely (fresh full diameter, no host-pipe dependence), handles collapsed and badly deformed lines that lining can’t, ideal for Orangeburg. Limits: needs entry and exit pits, and nearby utilities or certain soil conditions can rule it out.
Open excavation is not the obsolete option — it’s the right one for full collapses, severe bellies (the fix is re-laying pipe at correct slope, which only a trench does), shallow lines under plain lawn, and short runs. It’s often the cheapest bid in those cases. Trenchless earns its premium when the line runs under concrete, mature trees, additions, or finished landscaping — where what’s above the pipe costs more than the pipe.
